Ethel needs your help...

This Christmas we are asking for help to raise enough money for Ethel the Bulldog puppy to have the life-saving heart operation she needs.

Little Ethel has fought bravely for her life before, and she now needs to fight again to survive. Without the operation her prognosis for a future is extremely poor, and she will not live to see her first birthday.

Ethel is currently enjoying growing up at the Sanctuary, read on to hear how she came to be with us, and how you can help change her life.

Ethel came in with her brother and sister at three weeks of age. They had pneumonia and spent their first week inside an oxygen tank to help them to breath. Terry hand reared them, feeding them every three hours including through the night, with a tube to start as they were too weak to feed, and keeping them clean. Sadly their brother did not make it, but the two girls who were named Ethel and Hettie, bravely fought on although it was touch and go several times. Eventually they moved out of the tank and into a pen, and they started to feed themselves.

By the time they were 7 weeks old, the girls were going from strength to strength and causing tons of mischief!
However a veterinary check up showed that Ethel was suffering from a heart murmur. Further tests showed she has a congenital heart defect, which if she does not have operated on would mean that her life will be shortened and she would need medication to help make her more comfortable her with her inevitable heart failure.

Terry was heartbroken, having already lost two of his own dogs in old age to heart problems earlier this year. Losing an older dog is hard enough, but a puppy who had so far been through so much and fought so hard, if she was not ready to give up then neither was he.

After speaking to the vets, there is an operation that Ethel can have to help her live a normal, longer life. It will cost in the region of £6,000. The vet thinks that she will be large and strong enough to have the operation in January, when she is a tiny bit bigger and the valves etc to her heart have also grown.

In the meantime, Ethel is growing up at the Sanctuary. She loves meeting all the other animals that live there, and she also sends a lot of time in Reception meeting and greeting visitors. Her best, best friend though is a cat, with whom she plays all night long!

We are asking for help to raise the money she needs to have the operation, and save her precious life. Your donation, no matter how small, will help Ethel's broken heart be mended this Christmas.
