Izzy's Story

When we rescued 12.2hh Welsh B, Izzy, in 2008, she came to us because she had developed sarcoids (cancerous lumps) which had spread all over her face, neck, legs and groin area.

Her previous owner had been using her as a children's pony, because of her wonderfully sweet nature, but as a consequence of being left untreated, Izzy's sarcoids began to inhibit the fitting of her bridal and so she could no longer be used for this purpose. So, they tried to use her for breeding, but she didn't take and finally she came to us.

By this time her sarcoids (having gone untreated) had worsened considerably and required urgent attention She was given a course of chemotherapy which abated the condition, and her lumps began to decrease in size and number. However, as they can do, they gradually started to reappear.

With her beautiful brown eyes, lovely long lashes and flowing locks it was only a matter of time before Happy Ending's Izzy was picked to be a star of the small screen.

In 2010, we were approached by the makers of Channel 4's 'Animal Madhouse' who were looking for animals with medical or behavioural problems. Just like us, when they saw beautiful Izzy they fell in love with her, and we were asked to travel up to Liverpool to have her treated by a specialist in sarcoids. The cameras were there at every stage; filming her examination and treatment - and like all good movie stars Izzy didn't put a foot (or a hoof) wrong.

In 2011 she had another session of chemotherapy, which, while a little uncomfortable for her at the time, is otherwise pain free. Her lumps are, thankfully, painless and the only side-effect of her condition is that she is very conscious of having her head touched. She is otherwise a dream to handle and a pleasure to own.

With periodic chemotherapy, we are able to maintain Izzy's condition at a manageable level so that she doesn't suffer pain or discomfort, however it will prevent us from rehoming her which is a real shame as she is such a delightful pony.

Izzy's chemotherapy treatment is costly (around £600-£700 a session), and so we are always grateful for donations to assist us. If you would like to contribute to Izzy's Appeal, please use the DONATE BUTTON above.
